Buterne was a French organist and composer, the son of a Court organist, and also author of a treatise on how to learn music (1752). His Sonata in C minor, written in a mixed French–Italian style, was published around 1750 as for any of the melody instruments of his day. But it suits the alto recorder perfectly in key, range (up to high G), and spirit. A wonderful workout for amateurs and professionals alike!
