Description
Gottfried Keller, Trio Sonata in G major for Alto Recorder, Oboe or Violin, and Basso continuo. Edited by David Lasocki. Basso continuo realization by Bernard Gordillo. Published 2023.
Part of the chamber music written for the oboe band of Princess (later Queen) Anne of Great Britain and her consort Prince George of Denmark around 1700, and also featured in the public concerts in London. This trio sonata has a most unusual form. The remarkable military affect of the first and fourth movements is perhaps unique in recorder music, although for oboists such as those in the band of Anne and George it must have been their bread and butter. The second movement, in the parallel minor key, is based on the principle of divisions over a ground-bass, but the divisions are divided among the solo instruments. The third movement is a Menuet, somewhat in the style of Lully, in which the upper parts move almost entirely in thirds.
