Never published before, not even in the Baroque period! Another excellent and fun collection of Baroque pieces: fine practice material, also useful as models for writing or improvising your own preludes and fantasies. A sonata, a division, and a suite are also presented in the Appendix for recorder and basso continuo.

[David Lasocki seems to have an unerring nose for discoveries related to the recorder…. The pieces of varying lengths are also formally varied. In addition to … dances, there is a solo sonata, fantasies changing meter several times, as well as variations. The preludes have improvisational features and display similar features to Hotteterre’s basic ideas. The pieces are not particularly difficult, but testify to an elegance and a stylistically diverse taste at the Hannover Court. This insightful edition is supplemented by reconstructed or transposed versions of some movements with basso continuo found in other sources.]

“Most of the solos are accessible to intermediate and advanced intermediate players…. The pieces are typical of Baroque solo music. Some are quite tuneful, and others require careful interpretation in the form of articulation and note-grouping to bring out the music and to avoid sounding like etudes. The edition is an ideal introduction to Baroque music for recorder students…. The collection can be recommended for study and advancement of one’s skills on the alto recorder. When mastered, there are several pieces that would make nice concert additions, and those with continuo are a performance bonus.”
