Thiemo Wind, Andreas Parcham and his Recorder Sonata(s). Instant Harmony Essays, no. 7. São Paulo, Brazil: Instant Harmony, 2023.
The capricious Sonata, or “Solo,” in G major by Andreas Parcham (1643–1712) has been a favorite work among recorder players since the 1960s. In modern editions and recordings, the composer’s first name has been anglicized to Andrew, owing to the mistaken notion that he was English. He certainly was not. Having been born in the Hanseatic city of Danzig, nowadays Gdańsk in Poland, Parcham spent all his working life in Amsterdam. In this Essay, the Dutch musicologist Thiemo Wind scrutinizes his life and works (of which the others have apparently not survived). The sonata’s original part books are reproduced in facsimile as an Appendix. See also the edition of the work by David Lasocki, likewise available from Instant Harmony.
